What are Chemical Peels?

For the best results from chemical peel treatments, JEM Medspa in Elmhurst and Orland Park, IL provides you with several different options. Your individualized facial treatment with chemical solutions will reveal healthier, more radiant skin. We proudly offer different chemical peel solutions, including glycolic, salicylic, Jessner’s and Mandelic peels, Glytone Lip and Eye Peel, and JEM Melanage Peel Systems. Chemical peel treatments reduce the appearance of skin flaws, such as wrinkles, fine lines, scars, rough patches, and hyperpigmentation issues. Causing the oldest skin layer to peel off, personalized chemical peels clear away damaged, dead skin cells. As your skin heals and starts to repair and rejuvenate itself, you will see a clearer, smoother complexion. A chemical peel is a great noninvasive treatment option that works well on the face and neck.

What are the Variations of Chemical Peels?

At our Orland Park and Elmhurst, IL offices, we offer chemical peels in several strengths (light, medium, and deep) to fit our patients' skin care concerns and goals.

Light peels: You can receive a light chemical peel on your lunch hour and get back to your daily routine. This type of peel will remove the top layer of your skin, giving your complexion a more radiant appearance and softer texture. We typically suggest that you schedule a light treatment at least once a month for the best glowing results.

Medium-depth peels: This type of chemical peel reaches further into the skin, and generally, you'll prefer to have this level of facial rejuvenation treatment during a long weekend. You may also need to prepare yourself for additional discomfort during and about an hour following the treatment. Medium-depth peels are best for patients who have significant damage to their skin, including deeper lines and darker pigmentation issues.

Deep peels: The most advanced of the three types of peels is the deep peel, and it does require the most recovery time. This more aggressive treatment can leave your face swollen, itchy, and peeling for a few weeks. Typically, patients who receive a deep chemical peel have age or dark spots, sun-damaged skin, prominent acne scars, or deep-seated scars. Because this type of chemical peel is usually uncomfortable for most patients, we may provide you with mild anesthesia before your peel.

Am I an Ideal Candidate For Chemical Peels?

Seeking the advice of a skin specialist is the first step in the journey to healthy, smooth skin. A team member at JEM Medspa will evaluate your skin during an examination in our Orland Park or Elmhurst, IL office before selecting a chemical peel treatment for optimal results. Usually, chemical peel candidates have visible issues, like scaly patches, hyperpigmentation, flaky skin, sun spots, fine lines, and wrinkles. To match your cosmetic concerns and goals, we may recommend varying levels of chemical peels.

How does the Procedure work?

During your chemical peel, we will ask you to lie in a comfortable position while administering your treatment. Before applying the personalized solution to your face, neck, or both, we will ensure your skin is cleaned. Next, we will brush the solution onto your face and allow it to sit for a short amount of time. At your consultation, we will determine how long the solution stays on. A team member will clean the peel off your face and apply a neutralizing agent. To protect your delicate skin from UV exposure, we recommend bringing sunscreen or a hat to wear outside.

What can i Expect after A Chemical Peel?

Depending on the strength of your chemical peel, you can expect the treatment area to peel and itch for a few days to two or more weeks. Following the procedure, a member of our team will discuss and provide detailed aftercare instructions for your skin. We recommend always applying sunscreen anytime you go outside, avoiding exfoliants, and using a moisturizing facial cream. Please keep in mind that no matter how badly your skin itches during the healing process, you should never pull the skin off. You may cause scarring to your delicate skin!

Chemical Peel FAQ

How much does a chemical peel cost?
Dr. Dreyfuss can discuss your costs in your consultation after he has created your chemical peel treatment plan. The cost of a chemical peel will vary based on the formula you get. JEM Medspa takes many payments methods, and we often run specials on facial treatments like chemical peels. Buying a package with several chemical peel treatments can also help you save money.

Will my face hurt after a chemical peel?
Based on the formula used, you might have some discomfort during and shortly after your peel. If you have a lighter peel, you will probably feel some discomfort; however, it goes away quickly with a handheld fan. Deep or medium peels are good for deeper skin blemishes and give you longer-lasting results, but they can be more uncomfortable. Topical anesthetics, medications, and soothing ointments may be used to help you feel more comfortable during the chemical peel. Dr. Dreyfuss or a member of his team will talk to you about post-treatment skin care to extend your results.

Will I be able to go back to work after a chemical peel?

Patients who receive a light chemical peel may feel comfortable enough to return immediately to their normal daily routines - with the exception of sun exposure - but medium and deep chemical peels may require a more involved healing period and time away from work.

When can I reapply makeup after a chemical peel?

Generally speaking, patients may be advised to wait at least 24-48 hours - and sometimes longer - before applying makeup after a chemical peel. This is particularly true for patients who had a deeper chemical peel, as makeup, brushes, etc. may introduce bacteria to the healing skin that can lead to infection, delayed healing, and other complications.

Can I combine a chemical peel with other treatments?
For even greater improvements to your skin, you may combine a chemical peel with another nonsurgical skin treatment at JEM Medspa. In your initial consultation, be honest with Dr. Dreyfuss when describing your skin concerns so he can create a comprehensive treatment plan to best address your goals. These may include injectable wrinkle treatments (such as BOTOX® or JUVÉDERM®) plus a chemical peel to rejuvenate your entire face.

Are chemical peels safe for dark skin?

Because each patient's skin is unique, our team will first conduct a thoroguh skin assessment to determine whether a chemical peel may be safe and approrpiate. In many cases, lighter and more superficial chemical peels may be a suitable treatment option even for darker skin. Again, however, this will vary from patient to patient.
