What is Microneedling?

If home skin care products no longer prove effective, but you do not want to undergo surgical procedures, try minimally invasive skin rejuvenation treatments, like SkinPen® microneedling. Also known as collagen induction therapy, our teams in Elmhurst and Orland Park, IL are happy to offer microneedling. Microneedling uses multiple fine needles to safely and effectively create micro-injuries in the skin. The micro-injuries stimulate the body's natural production of collagen and elastin. These important nutrients contribute to the overall health and appearance of your skin. Easily performed with other treatments, like vitamin serums or platelet-rich plasma (PRP), microneedling may help minimize pores, stretch marks, and scars. Schedule a consultation at JEM Medspa to learn more about the benefits of microneedling and how we can customize your treatment to meet your needs and goals.

What are the benefits of microneedling?

JEM Medspa offers microneedling to many Orland Park, IL patients who are looking to appear rejuvenated and fresh. There are several benefits of microneedling, including:

  • The reduction of wrinkles and fine lines
  • Improving the effects of skin care
  • Reducing the look of enlarged pores, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and other skin irregularities
  • Treating stretch marks
  • Reducing hair loss, in some cases
  • Enhanced texture and tone of skin
  • Reduced appearance of creases, fine lines, and symptoms of aging

Who is a candidate for microneedling?

If you experience slight to moderate skin problems, like a decrease in elasticity or rough skin texture, you might be a good candidate for microneedling treatments. Microneedling procedures may also improve the appearance of pores, stretch marks, and scars. Because collagen and elastin require a month or longer to have an effect on the skin, you will need to wait before seeing improvements from your microneedling procedure. However, when these nutrients start to increase, you will have natural-looking results and better, overall skin health.

How does microneedling work?

Taking about 30 – 60 minutes to complete, we perform microneedling treatments in one of our private treatment rooms. If needed, we can use a numbing cream or local anesthesia, but typically, patients only feel mild discomfort. To start your procedure off, we will clean your skin and then pass the handpiece evenly over the treatment area. After completing your microneedling, we may apply platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or a vitamin-infused serum so the nutrients penetrate deeper into the skin. Because the treated area is sensitive after the procedure, we will massage a moisturizer with SPF onto your skin.

What can I Expect after microneedling?

You may experience mild redness and swelling for around one day; however, these side effects should subside on their own. For 3 – 5 days after the treatment, you may also experience some peeling. Generally, it takes around 1 – 2 months to see changes in the health and appearance of your skin. During this time, your skin will start to heal and increase the production of collagen and elastin. For ideal outcomes and lasting skin benefits, we recommend 4 – 6 follow-up appointments every 4 – 6 weeks.

Microneedling FAQ

How much does microneedling cost?
During your consultation, a skilled team member will perform a skin analysis and then develop your unique plan. From there, we will discuss your treatment costs and what to expect during the procedure. JEM Medspa frequently has discounts on treatment packages so be sure to ask about our current deals in your appointment.

Can I combine other treatments with microneedling?
During the microneedling process, channels are created in your skin that make it easier for treatments to penetrate the lower layers. That's why microneedling is frequently combined with other treatments, like special serums or platelet-rich plasma (PRP). In your initial consultation, we will discuss what treatments would enhance your microneedling and which can help your skin's health.

How many treatments are recommended for optimal results?
Typically, patients get 3 – 6 treatments to receive their best results. However, the number of treatments you require will depend on your skin's condition and your goals. Microneedling may be done every 4 – 6 weeks as needed. During your initial consultation, our team will be able to estimate how many treatments you will want based on your skin and goals. Once your skin goals are reached, we suggest receiving maintenance sessions about twice a year.

Is microneedling safe for everyone?
For the most part, microneedling is appropriate for all skin types and tones. Skin injuries created by microneedling are so minor there are very few side effects after the treatment. Microneedling can be applied to most areas of skin, including the face, arms, neck, thighs, chest, and lower legs. Microneedling is not recommended if you have been on Accutane recently, plus if you have an open wound, active skin infection, or herpes simplex. In addition, you may not be able to get microneedling if you're pregnant, nursing, or getting radiation therapy.

What exactly is microneedling?
Collagen induction therapy or microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure to tighten and rejuvenate your skin. Collagen is a fibrous protein that helps your skin stay supple, smooth, and tight. Eventually, your natural supply of collagen are reduced and your skin becomes thin and loses elasticity. Microneedling casues small wounds in your skin. These micro-injuries force your skin to increase its collagen production and generate new skin cell growth. After a short recovery period, your skin is firmer, brighter, and healthier.
