What is the Vampire Facial?
The teams at JEM Medspa in Elmhurst and Orland Park, IL are happy to offer our Chicago community the popular Vampire Facial. This treatment helps rejuvenate the complexion by encouraging the production of collagen with SkinPen® microneedling and platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP). Using a specialized handpiece that has small needles, we gently glide the microneedling device over the complexion to create micro-injuries on the face, neck, or torso. This process helps the skin increase collagen, which smooths and tightens the complexion. Vampire Facials also use your PRP to deeply nourish the skin. By applying your nutrient-rich PRP, it helps the skin heal and encourages the growth of new skin cells. When combining both of these powerful skin rejuvenation procedures, patients can reduce the appearance of wrinkles, scars, blemishes, and other skin problems. Please call JEM Medspa to schedule an appointment, and let us help you achieve your skin care goals.

Am I an Ideal Candidate for a Vampire Facial?
Men and women who want to improve the appearance and texture of their skin are good candidates for the Vampire Facial. For patients with dry skin, saggy skin, wrinkles, fine lines, and acne scars, this treatment could help improve the overall health and look of your complexion. Vampire Facials may also help men and women combat the effects of sun damage, which can cause a variety of skin conditions, such as brown spots or rough-textured skin. Unfortunately, a Vampire Facial is not a good treatment option for everyone. Certain conditions that can prevent you from undergoing a Vampire Facial include:
- Utilizing Accutane for acne
- Being pregnant
- Having active acne, eczema, or rosacea
How Is a Vampire Facial Performed?
In one of our private treatment rooms, we will start the procedure by drawing about four tablespoons of blood from your arm for the PRP therapy. Next, we will place the small vial in a centrifuge machine so it separates the viable cells, platelets, and growth factors from the rest of your blood. During this process, we will start the microneedling part of your treatment. Using innovative microneedling technology, the specialized device has tiny needles, which create micro-injuries in the skin. These micro-injuries do not damage the skin; instead, they encourage the production of collagen. Once we have completed your microneedling, we place the PRP serum on your complexion and allow it to soak into the skin. After the PRP has completely absorbed, we will cleanse your skin.
What Can I Expect After a Vampire Facial?
Following your Vampire Facial, you may experience mild swelling, bruising, and inflammation. For three days, our team suggests avoiding a few things, such as applying makeup, swimming in pools, and using abrasive skin care products. Strong chemicals, bacteria, or exfoliants can impact your delicate skin and may cause negative side effects. If you plan on being outdoors, we highly recommend avoiding excess sun exposure, using sunscreen, and wearing protective clothing. Because the skin needs time to heal and increase collagen production, optimal results are usually visible after the first couple of weeks.
Vampire Facial® FAQ
Does a Vampire Facial hurt?
While some people may experience minor discomfort, most do not find the Vampire Facial painful. Taking the small amount of blood needed to create the specialized serum feels like the minor pinch of any regular blood draw. Before we begin the microneedling process, we can use a topical anesthetic on the skin to help make your experience more comfortable.
Are Vampire Facials safe?
Because the Vampire Facial uses your own blood to create the PRP serum, it is generally considered very safe for the majority of patients. Microneedling is a minimally-invasive procedure that is also considered safe for most patients. People with active skin infections, skin cancer, and hemophilia may not be candidates for this procedure. During your consultation, we can review your medical history and current health to ensure you're a great candidate for the Vampire Facial.
How many Vampire Facials should I get?
At first, you might want to have multiple treatments scheduled every couple of weeks. Based on the starting condition of your complexion and your specific concerns, your technician will develop a Vampire Facial plan to rejuvenate the health of your skin. Between treatments, you can get a facial or other skin treatment to exfoliate old skin and nourish new skin layers.
How often should I receive Vampire Facials?
Following the initial series, you should schedule maintenance sessions 2 – 4 times every year. How often you need treatments will be based on the health of your skin and goals, so we will help decide on your unique Vampire Facial treatment plan. Your aesthetician will make suggestions on how frequently you should get treatments to keep your complexion strong and healthy.
Should I get Vampire Facial or injectable wrinkle treatments?
A Vampire Facial delivers long-term rejuvenation. Injectable wrinkles treatments provide faster improvements. Based on your concerns, you may prefer microneedling with PRP by itself, or you could combine it with an injectable treatment, like BOTOX®, JUVÉDERM®, or Restylane®. In your initial consultation, a member of our team will develop your treatment plan to match your goals.
Is there any downtime after a Vampire Facial?
Downtime is minimal, with most patients experiencing redness and mild swelling for 24 – 48 hours. Normal activities can usually be resumed immediately, but it’s recommended to avoid strenuous exercise and direct sun exposure for a few days.
